Limelight Salutes the "Pillow" -
Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival Celebrates 75th Anniversary
June 2007
Lee, MA
This season, the internationally renowned Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival celebrates its 75th anniversary. Limelight is proud to have supplied equipment and supplies to the festival for 36 years.
Jacob's Pillow is unique as the only dance institution to be named a National Historic Landmark. The historic site includes among its 160+ acres and numerous buildings, three unique stages including the first theater in the U.S. built specifically for dance.
The "Pillow," as it is affectionately referred to, presents dance from all the world over and in all forms, styles, and traditions. When you include the totality of Pillow offerings including exhibits, educational programs and performances, over 80,000 people attend Pillow events each season.
Located in the town of Becket in the Berkshire hills of western Massachusetts, Jacob's Pillow's location is rich in history. Originally a family farm in the 1700s, in the 1800s the Pillow's location served as a station on the Underground Railroad. In 1933, legendary dancer, teacher, and choreographer Ted Shawn founded the Festival as a showcase for his company of Men Dancers.
The Pillow's performance venues include the Ted Shawn Theatre which seats 620. Designed by Joseph Franz and constructed in 1942 of hand-hewn native timber, the TST is the first theatre in America built specifically for dance. Built in 1990, the Doris Duke Studio Theatre offers a less formal, flexible performance space with 220 reserved seats. Inside/Out (the Marcia and Seymour Simon Performance Space), is an informal outdoor stage.
In addition to the 3 performance spaces, the Pillow has three rehearsal studios as well as several exhibit spaces.
Limelight has been pleased to provide extensive, season-long lighting package rentals to both indoor facilities and to provide various draperies and portable dance flooring, as well as lighting and productions supplies used in both venues. We look forward to many more years serving this distinguished organization and salute all who have made the Pillow's history rich, its present essential and its future bright!
